The Rolling Rivers Trailer is a handy tool used to teach children and adults
about watersheds (drainage basins) and river systems. It is an interactive,
hands-on opportunity to see stream processes in action. It's FUN! For local information contact us. For outside our area contact your local Conservation District.
The Rolling Rivers Trailer is a handy educational tool used to teach children and adults about watersheds and river dynamics.
The trailer is five feet wide by ten feet long. It is equipped with a tank and pump to re-circulate water through the river. It has a stainless steel bed that is six inches deep and filled with a sand-like material made from recycled milk jugs. “Rivers” are dug into the sand with a plastic shovel and detailed with vegetation, rocks, farm scenes, housing developments, natural areas, culverts, dams or whatever else imagination and props will allow. With this set-up realistic examples of many watershed situations can be illustrated, such as river energy and landform development, riparian area importance, the effects of non-point source pollution, dams and diversions.
Presentations can be developed to introduce concepts prior to table demonstrations. Demonstrations are interactive, hands-on opportunities for people to see streams in action. To design your project and schedule the trailer for your group, contact Patti Mason at the Flathead Conservation District at 752-4220 or
